The word "vário" (along with its masculine and feminine plural forms, vários and várias) is identical in meaning, spelling, and grammatical function in both Brazilian and Continental Portuguese. The only difference is pronunciation. In Brazilian Portuguese, vowels are generally more open and the rhythm of speech is more "syllable-timed" (each syllable carries more weight). In Continental Portuguese, unstressed vowels are often reduced or "swallowed," making the pronunciation sound more closed and clipped.
