Is the word teremos the same in Brazilian and European Portuguese?
No
While the spelling, grammar, and literal meaning of "teremos" are identical in both dialects, there are significant differences in typical usage and pronunciation.
- Usage (Prepositions): In Brazil, the verb ter (to have) is almost always followed by the preposition "que" when expressing obligation (e.g., teremos que). In Portugal, it is more natural to use the preposition "de" (e.g., teremos de).
- Usage (Existence): In Brazil, it is very common to use ter to mean "there is/are" (e.g., teremos problemas). In Portugal, this is considered informal or incorrect in many contexts; a Portuguese person would prefer the verb haver (e.g., haverá problemas).
- Usage (Formality): In Brazilian Portuguese, "teremos" is quite formal. In everyday conversation, Brazilians much more frequently use the periphrastic future "vamos ter" (we are going to have).
- Pronunciation: Brazilian Portuguese features more open, clear vowels. In Continental Portuguese, there is significant vowel reduction, meaning the first "e" in "teremos" is often swallowed or reduced to an almost inaudible sound, and the final "s" is pronounced as "sh" ([tɐ.ˈɾe.muʃ]).
