The word "profundo" is identical in meaning, spelling, and grammar in both Brazilian and Continental Portuguese. The only difference is pronunciation. In Brazilian Portuguese, the vowels are generally more open, and the unstressed "o" at the end of the word is pronounced clearly as [u]. In Continental Portuguese, vowels are more "closed" or "reduced"; the final "o" is often shortened to a very subtle, unstressed [ɐ] (sounding like a muffled "uh"), and other unstressed vowels in the word may be more compressed.
