In Portugal, the word pousada carries a much more prestigious connotation. It is most commonly associated with the Pousadas de Portugal, a famous network of luxury hotels located in converted historical landmarks like monasteries, castles, or convents. Because of this, a Portuguese person looking for a simple, budget-friendly guesthouse would rarely use the word pousada; instead, they would use terms like residencial, pensão, or the modern, broader term alojamento local.
