Is the word percebeu the same in Brazilian and European Portuguese?

No.

While the spelling and grammar of "percebeu" are identical in both dialects, there is a significant difference in typical usage and semantic range.

In Brazilian Portuguese, the verb perceber is primarily used to mean "to notice" or "to realize" (synonymous with notar or dar-se conta). In Continental Portuguese, however, perceber is the standard, everyday word used to mean "to understand" (synonymous with compreender). Because of this, when a Portuguese person wants to express the Brazilian meaning of "noticing" a detail or a change, they are much more likely to use the verb reparar.

Brazilian Portuguese (Natural usage of "perceber" to mean "to notice")

  1. Ele percebeu que algo estava errado. (He noticed that something was wrong.)
  2. Você percebeu o erro no documento? (Did you notice the error in the document?) . Ela percebeu que eu estava triste. (She noticed that I was sad.)
  3. Eles perceberam a mudança no clima. (They noticed the change in the weather.)
  4. Eu percebi que você esqueceu a chave. (I noticed that you forgot the key.)

Continental Portuguese (Natural usage to express the same ideas)

  1. Ele reparou que algo estava errado. (He noticed that something was wrong.)
  2. Tu reparaste no erro no documento? (Did you notice the error in the document?)
  3. Ela reparou que eu estava triste. (She noticed that I was sad.)
  4. Eles repararam na mudança do tempo. (They noticed the change in the weather.)
  5. Eu reparei que tu te esqueceste da chave. (I noticed that you forgot the key.)
