While the spelling and the core meaning of "rate of occurrence" are identical, there are differences in typical usage and secondary meanings. In Brazil, "frequência" is the standard word used to discuss school or work attendance. In Portugal, however, "frequência" is most commonly used to refer to mid-term exams or continuous assessment tests. Additionally, when expressing the concept of "attendance" or "regularity," a Portuguese person would more naturally use the word "assiduidade."
