Is the word este the same in Brazilian and European Portuguese?

No.

While the spelling and the core meaning of "este" (meaning "this") are identical in both dialects, there is a difference in typical usage. In Brazilian Portuguese, the strict grammatical distinction between este (near the speaker), esse (near the listener), and aquele (far from both) is frequently collapsed in spoken language; Brazilians often use esse for objects that are physically close to them. In Continental Portuguese, this distinction is much more strictly maintained in daily conversation.
