In Continental Portuguese, the unstressed initial "e" is highly reduced, often sounding like a very short [ɨ] (similar to a muffled "u"), whereas in Brazilian Portuguese, it is more open and clearly pronounced as [e] or [i]. Additionally, the vowels in the middle of the word tend to be more closed in Portugal and more open in Brazil.
