Is the word avançados the same in Brazilian and European Portuguese?
Yes
The difference between "avançados" in Brazilian Portuguese and Continental Portuguese is strictly phonetic. There are no differences in spelling, grammar, or fundamental meaning.
Differences in pronunciation:
- Vowel Reduction: In Continental Portuguese, unstressed vowels are much more "reduced" or closed. The initial "a" in avançados will sound much more muffled or swallowed in Portugal than in Brazil, where it is clearly articulated.
- Sibilance: The "s" at the end of the syllable (-dos) in Portugal is almost always pronounced as a "sh" sound ([ʃ]). In many regions of Brazil (such as São Paulo or the South), it is pronounced as a standard "s" sound ([s]), though in Rio de Janeiro, it may also take the "sh" sound.
